Martin Ezequiel Alvarez Salomon died unexpectedly on Friday, September 11, 2020 at his home in New Jersey. Martin was born in Lima, Peru on February 12, 1963, the son of the late Ezequiel Alvarez Marini and Hilda Salomon Carrillo. Martin earned a law degree from University of Lima and completed courses for a MA on International Law and Human Rights at American University in Washington, DC. Besides his native Spanish language, he was fluent in English, French, German and Portuguese. He worked at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States in Washington DC and completed several assignments for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and other United Nations agencies, serving in missions to Bosnia, Rwanda, and Haiti. He moved to New Jersey in the late 1990s and worked in several New Jersey State agencies including Department of Labor, and Families and Children Services. He loved cooking, traveling, and collecting many types of souvenirs. He also adored cats, and sadly lost Peluka, his feline friend of 17 years, earlier this year. Martin traveled extensively, enjoyed the historical beauty of the major European cities, and reveled in the treasures of their museums. Martin was predeceased by his beloved father. He is survived by his mother Hilda Salomon, of Lima, his two sisters Lily (Glenn Houston) of Schenectady and Cecilia (Javier Rios) of Lima, his nephew Esteban Valderrama of Lima, his niece Regina Houston of Brooklyn, and his nephew Andrew Houston (Clare) of Denver, Co. A burial mass in Spanish will take place on Saturday October 10 at St. Anthony’s Church 11:00 AM (331 Seward Place, Schenectady) which will be streamed live via Facebook. Due to Covid-19, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Lima, Peru. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Vale Cemetery, 907 State St. Schenectady NY 12307, or American Diabetes Association, PO BOX 7023, Merrifield VA 22116, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady, NY.
